BMW M vehicles are built to perform--but they're also built to adapt. With M Driver Profiles and M Modes integrated into your iDrive system, you can fine-tune exactly how your vehicle responds. Whether you want a smoother setup for everyday use or a more aggressive configuration for spirited driving, your BMW lets you store two personalized profiles using the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel.

This guide explains how to adjust those settings step by step, so you can match your drive to the road every time.

What M Driver Profiles and M Modes Do

M Driver Profiles--also called M Drive configurations--allow you to customize your vehicle's core performance settings. Each profile controls:

  • Engine response
  • Steering weight
  • Suspension stiffness (if equipped)
  • Brake pedal feel
  • Stability control
  • xDrive traction settings (on AWD models)

You can assign two unique setups to the M1 and M2 buttons, making it easy to toggle between comfort and performance with a single press.

M Modes affect your instrument cluster layout and driver assistance settings. They include:

  • Road Mode: For everyday driving, with all safety systems active.
  • Sport Mode: Reduces intervention from some driver aids and enhances display focus.
  • Track Mode: Designed for closed-course use, disabling all assist systems and simplifying in-car displays for maximum driver focus.

How to Set Up Your M1 and M2 Profiles in iDrive

To configure your M Drive Profiles, start by pressing the Setup button near the gear selector. This opens the M Setup screen in iDrive.

From there, you can choose your preferred settings for:

  • Engine: Efficient, Sport, or Sport Plus
  • Chassis: Comfort, Sport, or Sport Plus
  • Steering: Comfort or Sport
  • Brakes: Comfort or Sport (if equipped)
  • DSC (Dynamic Stability Control): On, M Dynamic Mode (MDM), or fully Off
  • xDrive: 4WD, 4WD Sport, or 2WD (available in M xDrive models like the M3 Competition)

Once you've made your selections, save them to a steering wheel button:

  1. Navigate to the M1 or M2 profile in the iDrive system.
  2. Adjust all performance settings as desired.
  3. Press and hold the corresponding M1 or M2 button on the steering wheel until you see a confirmation on the screen.

Your configuration is now stored and can be activated with a single tap.

When to Use Each Profile and Mode

The goal is to match your setup to your driving needs.

  • M1 Profile (Comfort-Focused)
  • Ideal for daily commuting. Choose Efficient engine response, Comfort steering, and full DSC for a smooth and relaxed experience. Use this with Road Mode.
  • M2 Profile (Performance-Focused)
  • Best for open roads or spirited drives. Select Sport Plus engine response, Sport suspension and steering, and MDM or DSC Off. Combine with Sport Mode for added focus and reduced driver assistance.
  • Track Mode
  • Only use on closed courses. Track Mode disables all assist systems and shifts display content to the essentials. It must be activated by pressing and holding the M Mode button for three seconds.

If your BMW includes the M Drive Professional package, these advanced settings can take your driving experience even further. Learn more about that here.
