BMW Model Names Explained

BMW model names can be confusing, especially with changes and updates in recent years. From ascending numbers to additions like xDrive and M models, it's easy to get lost. Thankfully, BMW follows consistent patterns throughout its lineup that are simple once you learn them. Here's a quick guide so you can shop with confidence.

What Does BMW Stand For?

Before breaking down badges and trims, it helps to know what the name means. BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates to Bavarian Motor Works in English. Today, BMW AG is the parent company behind the vehicles and the brand's famous slogan, The Ultimate Driving Machine. For a deeper look at the history behind the name, see our post on what BMW stands for.

BMW's roots trace back to early aviation and engineering in Bavaria, a region in southern Germany. One of the earliest connected companies was Rapp Motorenwerke, founded by Karl Rapp. During the World War I era, the business became known for producing aircraft engines before expanding into motorcycles and automobiles.

The brand's home base is Munich, Germany, and that Bavarian identity is reflected in the BMW logo. The blue and white segments reference the colours of the Bavarian flag -- one of the most recognized emblems in the automotive world, appearing across BMW motorcycles and modern vehicles alike.

Options Within Each Model

Within each series, BMW offers variations in body style, size, and performance:

Gran Coupé

A roomier coupé with four doors. Same model style, more passenger space.

Gran Turismo

Increased trunk space and a higher driving position in four-door sedan form.

ALPINA

High-performance editions produced on BMW factory lines in partnership with ALPINA Automobiles. Learn more in our BMW ALPINA deep dive.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

You may have seen a 5 Series labeled as a 530i, 540i, or M550i. In general, the larger the last two digits, the more powerful the engine. A 540i will outperform a 530i, for example.

While these numbers were originally tied to engine displacement, they now reflect a general performance tier rather than exact engine size.

What Do the Letters Mean?

The letter at the end of each model name indicates the fuel type:

i
Gasoline

e.g. BMW 330i

d
Diesel

e.g. BMW 320d

e
Plug-In Hybrid

e.g. BMW 530e

BMW's electric i Models place the i before the number in the name. A BMW i4 is fully electric, while a BMW 330i is gasoline-powered.

What Do xDrive and sDrive Mean?

xDrive is BMW's intelligent all-wheel-drive system, available on select models. sDrive denotes the standard two-wheel-drive configuration. When a model includes xDrive, it appears directly in the vehicle's full name.

Example: BMW X3 xDrive30i -- X3 model, all-wheel drive, gasoline-powered, performance tier 30.
