BMW Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles combine a combustion engine, an electric motor, and a high-voltage battery to reduce fuel consumption and local CO₂ emissions while still delivering strong performance. They can be charged at a power socket, home wallbox, or public charging station and are ideal for drivers who want electric capability for everyday driving with the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer trips.

Temperature is one of the most important external factors affecting battery performance and capacity. Cold and hot weather can influence efficiency, which is why pre-conditioning the vehicle while charging can help. Other factors that affect range include air conditioning, carried load, route type, and individual driving style.

Regular charging is highly recommended to maximize efficiency and electric driving capability. Plug-in hybrids can also recover some energy through regenerative braking, and even if you do not charge, the vehicle can still operate like a conventional gasoline-powered BMW with electric assistance when needed.

BMW Plug-in Hybrid vehicles, including their high-voltage components, do not require any special scheduled maintenance outside of the factory-recommended maintenance for new BMW vehicles. BMW Canada also provides warranty coverage for the high-voltage lithium-ion battery assembly against defects in materials or workmanship for 8 years or 128,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first.
